DC Intern Dallibeth Estevez Interview

JASMINE: ASPIRE—What was your life like before joining Urban Alliance, and what inspired you to join?

Dallibeth: I joined Urban Alliance during my 11th grade summer because I had received workshop training from Sean sponsored by my library job. My 11th grade year was busy for me. I was doing my school thing, trying to have a social life, and playing sports such as Lacrosse and Basketball for Wilson. I joined Urban Alliance because Sean said I might be able to work at the World Bank, which would jump start to my career hunting.

JASMINE: WORK—Can you give me some details on the work you do on a day-to-day basis?

Dallibeth: Typically intern jobs such as copying, faxing, filing, and shredding, but I have had the opportunity to shadow my mentor/supervisor, create flow and organizational charts, input and analyze data for the monthly budget variance report which is used to compare spending habits with budgeted money for the month, and I also had the opportunity to attend staff meetings.

Jasmine: SUCCEED—What are your plans after the internship ends? For example, what college are you attending, what will you be majoring in, and why?

Dallibeth
: After my internship, I plan on preparing to enter school. I will be attending La Salle University in Philadelphia, PA, majoring in Economics. I will be attending La Salle because it has given me the most aid to attend and it will help me better with myself on an educational/spiritual level.

For me I thought that there were no scholarships out there I was eligible for. But when I researched and asked questions. I found out I was eligible. Apply!! I found my scholarships through my Counselor, she provided me with a packet and told me to look for the ones I’m eligible for and apply.

Places you can go to, to search for and apply!

Scholarships are very important because it helps out when you really don’t have money to pay for the school. Some Scholarships pays for certain things. Ex.

Senioritis

Senioritis usually occurs to seniors who have already completed their college applications and especially to those who have already been accepted to college. Symptoms include laziness, lack of initiative, repeated tardiness and absences, and a generally dismissive attitude. In order to prevent or cure senioritis I suggest that you sit down and talk to someone you trust and know won’t use what you told them to judge you. Ask for suggestions. Create a planner for you to stay organized. I prefer a week-to-week planner so that you know exactly what to do everyday. If something was to come up all you have to do is just look at your planner and try to fit it in for that day. This helps a lot especially for college students. For example, knowing when you have papers due is something college students will have to keep track of. Also if you have time on your planner where you don’t have anything to do I prefer getting some rest. Make sure in your planner you have taken time out for your self to study and do homework. These useful tips help seniors that have been diagnosed with senioritis overcome this disease. These tips are actually helping me overcome this. It’s making me become more organized and less tired.

A New Goverment

On Tuesday January 20, 2009, “A man whose father less than 60 years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath”. An African American who took the highest leadership in the nation was sworn in to the White House. Millions of people gathered in downtown Washington DC, to see Martin Luther King’s dream fulfilled. Many people see an African American in office and they listen to his remarkable, outstanding, phenomenal speech and think because he promotes change that a change will happen the next day. That’s not the case- a change won't happen tomorrow, a few months, not even a year or two, but he promised America there would be a change. Upset Republicans left town, or some were mature and are going to give President Elect Barack Obama the benefit of the doubt. As seen many Americans wave to the old, and stood for the new that believe in change.

Congratulations Barack and Michelle Obama!!

December Is Here!

December is here! Christmas is right around the corner. But have you seniors in high school turned in at least 3 to 4 college applications? If not, it’s very important to do so because most colleges are getting ready to start viewing applications. Pretty soon they will be making their decisions. As Christmas is around the corner, January is also fast approaching. What does that mean? That means that beginning January 1st you can file for your FAFSA. What does FAFSA stand for? FAFSA stands for Free Application for Student Aid. FAFSA is so important; it determines how much financial aid you get and how much money you have to pay out of your pocket for college. The earlier you apply, the better chance you have of receiving more money. I encourage every senior to turn your FAFSA in ASAP. I also encourage students to set up an appointment with your DC CAP Advisor and make sure everything is straight before you go on your winter break.
